enamel insect brooches

Using thin copper sheet, this brooch is formed from a single piece, without soldering, which gives it extra resilience in the kiln. The body is enamelled with a transparent deep green, to give a subtle likeness to beetle backs, and the bare copper is oxidised to a rich brown.

enamel insect jewellery brooch handmade from copper

Handmade copper brooch, decorated with kiln fired vitreous enamels.

I love beautiful insects as jewellery.

Design sketch in progress, for forming copper insect with integral pin mechanism

I start the design by pillow forming a body volume, then just sketch in with pencil to see where I want the wings, legs, and how I want to form the pin mechanism.

The pin hinge and retaining clasp is important part of my design, inspired by vintage pieces in my collection.

The pin mechanism is based on vintage costume jewellery, and in particular I like the hinge to look like eyes, while the simple curled metal retainer for the pin tucks under the body nicely. The actual pin, is handmade from stainless steel.
