Pattern Design: vintage floral illustration

Recreating some gorgeous illustrations from a vintage silk handkerchief, and creating a continuous repeating pattern design.

Using Procreate to re-draw these gorgeous vintage flower baskets, with a border to represent the silk handkerchief they’re on.

My little silk handkerchief, which is not in good condition, was too fragile to frame for display, but a great inspiration for some pattern design.

Once I have drawn the motifs, using Procreate, I work in Illustrator to create vectors and lay out my repeating units.

My process for pattern design using Adobe Illustrator is to group my motifs in relation to the dimensions of the background tile unit, offsetting distances between items carefully to match the size of the tile, and then I can move them around freely until I have a look I want.

I use Adobe Illustrator to experiment with creating a range of repeats and colour combinations. For this design, some include the handkerchief border, and some are the motifs only.

I’ve created a range of pallets for this print, keeping a playful vintage feel to them.

Once my seamless pattern is ready, in a range of colours, I add it to my Etsy store: Print and Bijouterie.
